Meet Mariannig - the face behind Nomador.com - Part Three

Once we had asked Mariannig Ferrari, founder of Nomador, all about her own personal inspirations and the motivation behind the website’s creation, we couldn’t resist asking just one more question…

As a home owner who welcomes many house-sitters, Mariannig has met some wonderful people and made lasting and meaningful connections from people all across the globe. So, we wanted to hear more about the experiences and people who had the most impact on her, through her own house-sitting journey.

Here’s what she said!

"We would have had no chance to meet him, had we not been looking for a house-sitter."

Yes, we’ve been doing it for more than 10 years now. This has allowed us to meet people that we would otherwise never have been lucky enough to meet. Definitely!

Three years ago, we entrusted our house to a couple where other home-owners found the profile ‘unusual’. This gentleman named René was the senior on our website: 94 years old. I was a bit upset because I saw them apply and apply and apply… without success. I called them and offered our house to sit. It turned to be a marvellous experience for us!

We spent the whole evening listening to René’s stories! He was around 18 when WW2 started and he was an apprentice at a butcher shop. He joined the Resistance, learned how to blow up trains, was made prisoner twice, escaped every time. Blowing up trains had allowed him to discover electricity... and after the war he decided to become an electrician. That was absolutely captivating. We learned a lot!

We would have had no chance to meet him, had we not been looking for a house-sitter.

"We started a discussion and step by step: we met extraordinary people."

Another friendship was built this year. I received an application, with…

  • Only one sentence: “is your house fit for a wheelchair?”
  • Nothing else.
  • Profile: totally empty.
  • No photo,
  • No identity checked (enough to upset me as you’ll guess, when we try to encourage our members to fill in Trust Profiles!).

But the mention to the ‘wheelchair’ had piqued my interest…

We started a discussion and step by step: we met extraordinary people. They are our age, their son is quadriplegic (sport accident at 19), that’s why our one-level house interested them, and they had long wanted to visit Brittany.

We had never met such positive people! Their son is a beautiful will-powered young man, who now drives his car alone, graduated in Tourism, practices wheelchair dancing. Wow!

Can you guess their last travel destination? Australia.

And I think they’d love to go back!

By the way: we have a functionality on Nomador which allows house-sitters to search a house-sit by ‘available to people with disabilities’. When we were working on the initial developments, we all liked the idea of doing it because people with disabilities are too often forgotten. So, when Charly (not knowing yet that I was the founder at Nomador), told me that he had found our house thanks to this function, that really pleased me!

"I built Nomador.com to play an active part in building a better world for the generations to come."

I feel that this story is a wonderful example of the benefits of Nomador. The way we describe those benefits is as follows:

1. Be inspired to choose to travel more frequently and in a life enhancing manner

2. Connect more easily with other like-minded pet, garden, home, and travel loving people globally…

3. And find your dream holiday solutions economically, in a high-trust, do-it-yourself environment, built for human values rather than just financial considerations.

I built Nomador.com to play an active part in building a better world for the generations to come, either through small actions every day or through our work.

I love what I do and I love the people I meet – this is my life now.
