What is working remotely?

Working remotely is simply the practice of working outside your office. It means more than simply working from home, though: with remote working, where you work is up to you.

The real patrons of the movement are Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson: founders of 37Signals and Basecamp, and authors of the hugely successful books ‘Rework’ and ‘Remote’. While ‘Rework’ challenges established business practices inside businesses, ‘Remote’ encourages workers to roam free, and make the world their oyster - and office.

As they explain on the back cover, “the modern office has become an interruption factory”, and “going remote allows the most talented people to produce the best work regardless of their location”. 

The pros of working remotely

1. Happier employees = happier business

As Pip Marlow, managing director of Microsoft Australia, explains in an op-ed for the Sydney Morning Herald, “recent studies support the business case for remote working by highlighting improved employee satisfaction, reduced attrition rates, fewer absences and reduced office costs.”

Microsoft employees regularly work away from the office, and Marlow actively encourages them to do so. “Our offices are wherever we are, our work hours are when we choose them. It's the outcome that's important.”

As Sean Kim writes on FastCompany, “Many of the greatest companies in the 21st century, including Virgin, 37signals, and IBM have built successful businesses providing people the freedom to work where they want, when they want, and how they want.” 

2. Increased productivity

Marlow also addresses the greatest concern faced by employers: how do you know if your employees or teammates are actually working? “Trust, or the lack of it, seems to be at the heart of many managers' reluctance to allow people to work remotely,” she explains.

In fact, research has shown that working remotely also improves productivity, with some studies seeing increases of up to 13% company-wide.

3. The world is your oyster

While landing your dream job or finding a model employee was previously confined to the several million inhabitants of your city, remote working means people can be hired from anywhere in the world.
