General description

  • Main home
Lovely cabin on Lake Arenal with upstairs loft bedroom and beautiful views. One hour to Arenal Volcano, hot springs and waterfalls. Two hours from Monteverde area or Pacific beaches. Great local hiking. Two miles from the small town of Nuevo Arenal with good restaurants, bank, and plenty of groceries. Two kitties will need to be fed and loved up on. Thank You! (non-smokers only)

Needs and Animals

  • My pets
  • 2 cats
I would like for someone who loves kitties to feed my cats twice a day and be sure they are brought in before sunset everyday and keep the litterbox clean. They are sweet and will want to sleep on the bed with you. I would want someone to sleep in my house every night (although free to explore the area during the day) and to leave the house as clean as they found it. I would also like the house sitter to totally enjoy the peaceful surroundings, birdwatching, and laying in the hammock if they wish. I have a small greenhouse which needs to be occasionally watered and you're welcome to eat anything that ripens while you are here!

Practical life

  • Village
  • 50 - 150 m² (530 - 1590 sq. ft.)
  • More than 1000 m² (1060 sq. ft.)
  • Bus stop
  • Market
  • Pharmacy
  • Internet
  • Washing machine
  • Enclosed garden
  • Ground floor
  • Disabled access
My house is on 2.5 acres and 1.5 kilometer from the rustic town of Nuevo Arenal, a mix of local Costa Ricans and extranjeros. Most people live in the mountainous hillsides overlooking the lake so the actual town is quite small. There is a great little organic store and lots of locally sourced fresh fruits and veggies available everywhere. If you're a meat eater (I'm not) there are organic chickens (not that it matters to the chicken! ;) There are also delivery services from the markets as well as individuals who come to the home to sell fresh fish and eggs. In addition, our pueblo has 3 or more small grocery stores where you can find everything you need. I have no car to offer, but the bus stop is right at the end of my driveway and buses go back and forth several times a day. Town is within walking distance although the mountain road is small with unkept shoulders and often there is rain, since we are in a rainforest and sometimes it can rain all day. There is a bank where you can use your ATM card for cash if you told your bank back home you would be traveling to Costa Rica. We have several amazing restaurants which is odd considering the size of the community, but lucky us! Our community is small, less than 3,000 people spread through the mountains, and we have not had much covid in our area. Our community is also very covid compliant with mask wearing and hand washing in public places, all stores, restaurants, etc. There's a local day clinic. The places in Costa Rica that have had the high covid rates are in the most populated areas. We have been very lucky and conscientious.

Comfort and Luxury

  • 2 floors
  • 2 rooms of which one bedroom
  • Regional
  • Terrace / Balcony
My house which is made entirely of stone, wood, and glass, is an upscale model of the traditional rustico homes. Actual tree trunks support the front and back porch roofs. No need for a/c as the altitude of our area keeps the temps between 68 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit year round. The house was built to direct the fresh air throughout. I don't have a TV but I do have internet and use my computer for work as well as for entertainment. The natural wooden stairs to the loft are wide and have railings. There's a queen bed in the loft and a futon couch downstairs that can be converted to a queen bed. There is only one bathroom and that is downstairs. There is a separate area for a washer and dryer. My home is private but located in a small barrio of neighboring houses. It overlooks one of the bays of Lake Arenal. I do use security cameras inside and out, but none in private areas of the house. There are weekly community breakfasts, pickle ball, tennis, nature hikes, Bridge, and other card game groups that are open to everyone. Twice a month there is a local Farmer's Market. Occasional live music is heard at one of our restaurants, and it's not unlikely to see the dancing horses come into town on the weekend in the evenings!

Tourism and Leisure

  • Mountain
  • Countryside
  • Forest
The view from my house overlooks Rainbow Bay, a part of the big Lake Arenal. Locally there is kayaking, paddle boarding, a public lake beach area, hiking, ziplining, and guided nature tours. At the opposite end of the lake, 35 miles away, is Arenal Volcano, a very popular tourist destination with lots of surrounding hot springs. It takes about an hour to drive there along the small winding country roads. Buses to/from Nuevo Arenal are not synchronized so you would have to either pay a lot for a taxi or rent a car for a couple of days. Same goes if you wanted to go back and forth to the beach in one day which is two hours away in the opposite direction but 4 or 5 hours each way by bus. Sometimes my friends go and invite my housesitters. ;) Typically people who have housesat for me have chosen to tour the country either before or after staying at my house. Monteverde Cloud Forest is also only an hour or so away but you'd want to spend at least 2 nights there to fully appreciate the unique area and go on the guided morning hikes. There's actually plenty to do locally where I live but luckily we're not a tourist destination.

From Wednesday 2021

To Wednesday 2021

flexible dates

I typically encourage people to come a day or two earlier and can stay a day or so later to learn the routine and be able to leave leisurely. I have built in an extra day so we can meet each other and go over the routine and to be able to properly thank you at the end of your stay. But the dates can't be any tighter. For getting here, the closest airport is Liberia International (LIR) at 2 hours away. Often I can offer to pick you up.. The San Jose airport (SJO) is 4 hours away and depending on flight times, can necessitate an overnight hotel stay in the town of Alajuela, where the airport is actually located. There are occasional day buses from the airport as well as private drivers who can be hired to pick you up. I can provide more information for interested housesitters.
