General description

  • Main home
Welcome to a private reserve in a true rainforest setting. Two of us live here as caretakers together with a cat, a dog and and all the possible forest creatures.

Always wanted to be in real tropical nature? This is your opportunity. You will be surrounded only by nature and it's sounds, able to watch stars without light pollution. You can explore cacao orchard, a live collection of forest orchids, rainforest streams and a network of trails, relax on a covered wooden platform at the lake or in a hammock next to bird trees. This is a great place for birdwatching and nature photos. Tired of the heat of lowland- and coastal Costa Rica? It feels more fresh here, 600m above sea level.

There are 4 simple wooden buildings, 50 m from each other, a 1ha lake for own hydropower (swim or catch fish) and cacao orchard, in total 4 hectares of relatively open area with low grass cover. The rest of the property is forest with rivers, streams and some trails.

We are located 3km from the nearest reliable neighbors. Landscape - forest, lake, pasture, no other houses in a visible distance. First pasture hut is 500m from us, followed by scattered developments downhill. 7km from international highway, 9km from the nearest town, 50km - San Jose, 100 km - Caribbean beaches.

Needs and Animals

  • My property
  • Many plants
  • A dog
  • A cat
We are looking for two mature house sitters who know countryside living. You must be able to stay in a place that is a bit remote and in a modest accommodation. Being a tropical forest, this is not a place safe enough for children. One of you always has to be on the property.

Our cat Bamboo and dog Gijo are interested in good company (both no special breed and quite healthy). You must love cats. Bamboo is afraid of strangers and we expect you to do your best to befriend him.

In case of not enough rain you will have to water a wild orchid collection of a botanical importance. It is like a small botanical garden, >300 plants that grow on tree trunks.

You will have to feed hummingbirds and clean their 2 feeders when needed.
You will also have to check the rain gauge and write down daily rainfall mm once a day as a backup for the weather station.
Daily walks around the property is our routine, also some small maintenance issues may occur, although nothing specific is to be expected.

A detailed description of how to deal with any practical issues is available.

Practical life

  • Isolated
  • 50 - 150 m² (530 - 1590 sq. ft.)
  • More than 1000 m² (1060 sq. ft.)
  • Internet
  • Washing machine
  • No elevator
  • First floor
  • No disabled access
You will sleep in a wooden cabin with electricity, internet (unlimited, avg. >5 mbps) double bed&bednet, table, fan, hot water shower, flushing toilet, small porch. You will spend daytime in the lodge 50m away, which has wi fi, electricity, a semi-open kitchen area with a big table, one modest lab room, 40 sq m of open area under the roof with hammocks and compost toilet 20m away.
We go shopping once a week to the town 8km from here, with an old pickup truck, manual gearbox (or you can opt for using a taxi).

Comfort and Luxury

  • One floor
  • 2 rooms of which 2 bedrooms
  • Traditional
  • Terrace / Balcony
The main luxury of this place is true nature and it's sounds. And a scenic lake, being able to fetch a cacao fruit or banana, or enjoy orchid diversity.
Reasonable internet is a bit of a luxury for this location.

Tourism and Leisure

  • Mountain
  • Countryside
  • Forest
Caribbean side of Costa Rica is ideal for exploration of nature, whether it is river rafting, zip lining or trips to waterfalls, watching birds, nature photography or being lazy on the beach. After your house sit or while we are at home.
