The beach is never far in St. John's--the closest beach is a 20 minute drive. While beaches are not ideal for swimming, they all have lots of hiking trails taking you across the rugged and beautiful landscapes present.
The Rooms is the local museum located downtown, and it has both natural history and cultural history of the area. St. John's is one of the oldest cites in Canada and has a long history to explore. The Rooms also has rotating art galleries featuring local artists.
Downtown St. John's is also full of history, with multiple art galleries, cafes, restaurants, and pubs in the area. Small information boards can be found throughout the streets detailing the long history. Signal Hill offers breathtaking views of the city no matter the time of day, and an amazing view of the ocean during the day. For those into the nightlife, George Street is place to be, with a bar to match whatever your mood.
For those with a car, there is an abundance of hiking trails within 20-30 minutes driving. Seeing the sunrise at Cape Spear is a must do, as it is the first sunrise in Canada. Any little trail in Newfoundland is bound to offer some adventure, and you're bound to see unmarked trails as you drive--hop out and explore!
Note: Moose are plentiful and driving during at night or at dusk/dawn on isolated roads is not advised.
