General description

  • Main home
Very private, single story 3 bedroom/2.5 bath Eco-Friendly family home [with separate detached "granny flat" studio], custom built in 2016. Perfect for couples and families of up to 4 children, NOTE: To be completely open, this sit is not suitable for families with very young children [bouncy dogs, a potentially bitey mink, a deck that has an infinity edge over the pond, a spa, hard tile floors throughout]; if your child is under the age of 5, or at any age cannot swim well enough to extricate themselves from the pond or the spa, please do not apply...I'm so sorry, but we never make exceptions on this, as the risks are too high for us to feel comfortable.

Outdoors, we have 9ha of our own woods and fields, with trails thru to help you explore. A large fenced back garden with a fire pit area, large deck off the back of the house overlooking the fish pond featuring a covered patio with outdoor kitchen, freestanding fireplace and a fenced-in veggie garden. A 5 person spa [and another fire place] is located on a separate patio - which has its own seating area - is off the master suite,.

Indoors, an open plan 'great room' design. Eat-in gourmet kitchen including a pizza oven, a small snug [bar to the yanks], office, utility room with large capacity washer and dryer. Master with ensuite, featuring dual sinks, shower and freestanding bathtub. Two further bedrooms [one with 2 twin trundle beds, the other with queen bed], a family bathroom and a powder room. Underfloor heating throughout and an air exchanger system to ensure fresh, healthy air quality.

Needs and Animals

  • My pets
  • Big garden
  • Vegetable patch
  • 4 dogs
  • Exotic pets
First and foremost, you'll need to be very responsible, active, and excellent at keeping to a basic schedule. We're primarily concerned with having carers here to look after our very loving - and home loving - animal children, who are specifically:
- A 7 year old spayed female Sussex Spaniel [an English endangered breed] named Annie; Annie is the pack leader and, according to her father, the "best dog ever" ;-);
- A 7 year old neutered male not-so-kleiner Kleiner Munsterlander [a German pointer breed] named Axel; he is a delightful, sweet, demonstrative and funny boy [and a runner...his only downside]
- Twin 4 year old neutered male Pugs named Bertie & Gussie; they are VERY cuddly, usually darling, sweet, adorable little men, however, like most twins, they can be a handful, and are rather infuriating at times...
- Fish. Lots of water babies. Too many to name [tho the large goldfish with the dot on its head is Dotty]
- An almost 1 year old albino female mink. Escaped from a local mink farm, and found her way to us...very sick, very frightened, and very small. Became a member of the family as we could not find her a rescue center place, could not bear to see her put down [the law views them as livestock when in captivity, but vermin once out in the wild], and we knew she could not survive in the wild as an albino. Rebel - her name is Rebel Rebel [we were not initially sure, to paraphrase the song if she was "... a boy or a girl" ] - was bred in captivity and is, therefore, acclimated to humans, but is neither tame nor cuddleable [Read: Friendly, adorable looks and behaviours are deceiving; she WILL bite [though she has never done so, even when terrified and ill or in a mood]. Hard. Hard enough to take a bit of a finger, so we are reliably informed. And she'll make every effort to escape if given the slightest chance to do so; it's in her nature]. Her majesty the evil genius lives in her own custom built enclosure outside near the veggie garden, and is cared for 2x daily by her 'human slaves'. Needless to say, perhaps, but I adore the beastie; she has quite the personality, is endlessly entertaining and extremely clever. Our neighbour the zoologist is quite taken with her as well...

Outside of caring for the menagerie, we expect our carers to care for our home as if it were the home of a loved one. Enjoy everything we've to share, but please be considerate, treat items with care, clean up after yourselves and the beasties, and return it to us as more or barely less as you found it, please. We do have an amazing housekeeper who is here every other week to take care of the supercleaning... Garden if you wish, but it's not expected [though we may need you to water the veggie garden in summer if it's not rained in a couple of days...]. We are long-time hosts [with another large pet / home sitting service] and we go to great lengths to ensure our carers are treated as honoured guests, made comfortable, with a plenty of staples in the refrigerator and larder to get started with.

We live in beatiful Djursland, the favourite summer holiday area of Denmark and the Danes [others, too]. While our home is very private, we've designed it for entertaining and an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Amenities are under 10 min away - grocers, butchers, bakeries, take aways, etc. There are a great many of things to do quite nearby: The seaside, castles [ruined as well as up and running], charming old world villages, a terrific amusement park, museums, golf, and 2 wild animal parks; indeed, one of these is our actual next-door-neighbour [you simply walk out the back of our forest and into the grounds!] and is home to bears brown and polar [!!!], wolves, moose, deer, foxes, wild boar and many other animals, as well as a decent cafe and a delightful kids play area!

Further afield, Denmark's second city, Aarhus -the 2017 European City of Culture and Gastronomy - is 35 minutes away, and can be reached by car or the local hourly train service. Aarhus is a wonderful university town with museums, cinemas, theatres, historic sites, music venues, terrific dining from Michelin starred restaurants to street food, upscale shops, etc.. A really terrific day out...

As noted, we're in the area where Danes [and others] come to spend their holidays. It's beautiful, with so much to do and see, and a comfortable quiet place to return to once you've enjoyed your day[s] out. We highly recommend visiting:
- Skandinavian Dyrepark, the wild animal park next door
- Michelin recommended restaurant, Moment, is 10 minutes away, with its unique ultra local sourcing, casual atmosphere, outstanding vegetarian cusine [not that kind of veggie; you'll never even realise you're missing the meat!] and an amazingly talented and charming sommelier, Carina. We've known her for years - she was previously at Molskroen, went to a Michelin 1*, and she left there to shape the beverages of Moment... Oh, and the staff are delightful as well...
- Also for foodies, another Michelin recommended restaurant, Molskroen. Twenty minutes from us, on the seaside, Molskroen is a much more upscale [with prices to match] spot. Chef Stefan is truly outstanding [he'll have his star at some point], with a real knack for designing a tasting menu. The location is beautiful, and the sevice on pointe. It's our posher date night destination...
- Aros Museum in Aarhus. Terrific small art museum with a diverse collection and the best views of the area from the rooftop art installation...
- Moesgaard Museum, one of Denmark's best history museums, with stunning views of Moesgaard forest and the sea. It is an noted architectural site as well, with a delicious cafe [don't miss the pickled herring plate!]
- Ebeltoft, a quaint old world village 10 minutes away, with multiple charming museums

flexible dates

Please note that the dates listed above INCLUDE a couple of days prior to our departure to get the routine down... We are flexible within a couple of days at both ends [prior to 18 May and post 26 May]; while you are here, we simply allow you to inhabit the main home and manage the day to day routine while we stay out in our separate and self contained 'granny flat' studio. You'd likely not see much [or anything] of us...
