General description

  • Main home
Spacious 4 bed house within 2 acres, on a wooded hill approx 1 km above the village of Les Eyzies de Tayac, Dordogne, France. It's in a very private, calm and tranquil area with no direct neighbours, but not remote. A car would definitely be necessary.

Needs and Animals

  • My pets
  • Animals with specific needs
  • A dog
Corky is a small playful and intelligent mixed breed male dog, approximately 3 years old and with a big personality! He would need feeding with his dry biscuits twice a day and taking for at least one fairly short walk each day. Corky is a rescue dog who knows both French and English commands. He's quite cute and asks for his food in a unique, noisy, bouncy way! He's small and quite stocky, black and tan with a white chest and his coat is wiry/curly. He easily uses the cat flap to come and go, and loves to sit in the sunshine. He walks nicely on the lead, and can be let off if there are no other animals about. He loves cuddles and playtime! It should be noted that a very important part of Corky's care is to ensure that he does not have access to anything he should not eat, eg handbags/shoes/belts etc. Corky is happiest as the only dog.

It's very peaceful up here in the woods - but just down in the village (riverside high street touristic town) there are 13 restaurants, various hotels, post office, 2 cash dispensers, a small supermarket with petrol pumps, doctors, nurses, pharmacy, ice cream parlour, butchers, bakers, etc. There is a museum and PIP information centre and a tourist centre. Les Eyzies is a UNESCO world heritage site and is home to where the first European skeletons were found. Montignac (Lascaux caves), Sarlat (medieval city), Beynac, La Roque Gageac and many other interesting historical sites are closeby, please note you will need a car.

We have central heating for the autumn/winter months. There is automatic security lighting to the front of the house for your safety, and at the front gates. We also have a house alarm, so your personal property is safe in our house. There's plenty of room for your vehicle in the large drive. We would need Corky's carer(s) to sleep on the main living floor as he is not permitted upstairs.

Tourism and Leisure

  • Forest
  • Museum
  • Cinema
If you enjoy pre-history, including cave paintings and crystal grottoes, chateaux, country life, wide rivers, gastronomy including foie gras, duck confit and truffles, you'll love it here in the Perigord Noir! The Lascaux caves at Montignac are a must (approx half an hour's drive) , also the Font de Gaume here in Les Eyzies, which has the last original polychromatic cave paintings of their type open to the public. (please check opening dates/times on all the websites). At Rouffignac you take a train ride deep into the prehistoric caves where the highlight are the marks of bear claws and wall/ceiling paintings. The chateaux of Castelnaud and Beynac are well worth a visit, and there are river boat trips with English commentary at La Roque Gageac. Sarlat is a gorgeous medieval city just 20 minutes away by car, and there is a cinema which shows French and English films, though we also have a large mixed collection of DVDs at the house. There are many lovely restaurants in the old cobbled streets behind the main modern high street, its a very charming place indeed!

To Thursday 2016

flexible dates

As we leave to go to the airport on the 2nd December we'd like our house/dog sitter to arrive at least a couple of days beforehand if possible, to get to know Corky our dog and his ways, and to familiarise themselves with our house. There are 3 bedrooms and shower room on the top floor, however we only use the middle floor (where all other rooms are) - Corky is not allowed upstairs and is used to sleeping in his bed outside our bedroom. The house/pet sit is probably until 25/26 Jan but we're a little flexible.
