General description

  • Main home
Sunny apartment in a typical Hamburg 4-floor Art-Nouveau building on a traffic-calmed tree-lined street with original features (tiles, wooden floors, high ceilings). Unrenovated but charming! Twin 3-year-old tabbies.

Needs and Animals

  • My pets
  • 2 cats
We have twin dsh tabby cats, who share this apartment with us. They are inside cats, need feeding twice a day and fresh water every morning. The cats love to be let out onto the balcony during good weather and will happily sit on cushions in the afternoon sun watching for luckless birds to stray too close. One is a lap cat who will come for cuddles, the other is really shy. Litter Tray (1) should also be scooped cleaned at least once a day to avoid unthinkable accidents. We use sawdust based organic litter that is loo flushable, so no need to schlep soiled cat trays into trash!

Traces of history such as the WW II bunker on the next street over and the cobblestoned square make this neighbourhood unique. It's on the way to being gentrified but still an interesting place to be, with young families, double-income-no-kids, students and elderly people. It's an honest-to-goodness authentic Hamburg neighbourhood with a friendly, relaxed feel.

At the square ('Glücksburger Platz') you'll also find a city bikes (STADTRAD) depot, so you can zoom to Emilienstrasse U-Bahn (underground) in 2 minutes flat. Around the corner on Eimsbüttler Strasse, Cafe 129 has fresh rolls, sweet treats and coffee to go. Newly opened Glücksburg Cafe up at the square also has delicious, locally-made ice-cream (try the Franzbrötchen...).

Proper supermarkets (organic, regular and discount) and a drug store and pharmacy are walking distance. Take a 10 minute walk to Eppendorfer Weg's eateries or the Schanzenviertel's bars. Keep going towards the harbour and you'll be in St Pauli and within coo-ee of the Reeperbahn after a 10 minute taxi ride or a 30 minute walk.

Getting to the:

It's less than a 10 min walk to/from Emilienstrasse U-Bahn Station on the U2 line. This line goes directly to town, passing through Downtown (Jungfernstieg, 7 minutes) and the Central Station (Hauptbahnhof, 10 minutes).

From the Hauptbahnhof you need 40 minutes on the S1 to the airport. * TIPP!: Make sure you get into one of the first 3 carriages or you'll end up somewhere else! The same trip with a taxi would cost you around 25€ and take 20 minutes without traffic.

If you have your own car, there is free parking on the street. Anytime before 6pm you should be able to find a park close to the apartment. Car-Sharing companies Car2Go and DriveNow are in the area.

A 5 minute walk to local bus stops, where Line 4 takes you directly to the central Hamburg University Campus and Line 20 will get you directly to the teaching hospital UKE in one direction and Altona/Ottensen in the other.

Comfort and Luxury

An avid bookworm, I have a large library of contemporary and classic writing, from poetry to plays and back to novels.

Tourism and Leisure

  • City
No trip to Hamburg is complete without exploring the port that gives this city its maritime flavour. Walk the lake's edge, or bike around the green summer streets. Hamburg has a thriving music scene, centred in nearby St Pauli.
