General description

  • Secondary home
The house will eventually be a charity home for the elderly, and is currently still being improved and having facilities fitted. For the moment however, during winter, it is just an empty house

The charity is funded entirely by a family who has a Bed & Breakfast business in Bucharest, and some of the profits of the B&B are used to fund the charity project. The project involves building a dual purpose care home and community centre for the needy elderly of the local town. The elderly get very small pensions here, and life is hard and cold during the winter for the elderly who do not have any family.

It will take a little longer to have the house fully prepared for the needs of the elderly occupants. The main things preventing the house from being fully prepared is an improved electricity supply, a purpose built kitchen, and centralised heating. The house is currently being heated with electric radiators and gas heaters, and there is currently a provisional kitchen Until the house is suitable for elderly occupants the house is mostly an empty house, and entirely empty during the winter months when we advertise it for house-sitting.

The property is situated on the edge of a town in the South Romanian countryside. It is peaceful and quiet here (when the local dogs are not barking). The house is a big one, and parts of it are still needing to be finished in terms of paint and electrical fittings, but the middle floor of the house that would be occupied is as good as or very close to the initial condition we would like it to be in. There is currently just a provisional kitchen for the house, this is situated on the middle floor that will eventually be a bedroom.

Altogether the property consists of the new house, an orchard, two older buildings, and a meadow

Needs and Animals

  • My property
  • A dog
  • 4 cats
[It is a bit different this year because of the virus. The house usually accommodates cycle tourers from April to October, and we make it available for housesitting other times. This year we will make the house available for housesitting from mid-September, as we have had only one cycling guest turn up for accommodation this year. However, touring cyclists could still turn up seeking accommodation for a night up untill the end of October.]

The jobs whilst house sitting from November to April would be to feed the cats and maintain what needs to be maintained on the property (if anything comes up).

There is a more involving (but more fun) opportunity for the months from April to November, but it cannot be described as purely a house-sitting position. Please contact us for more information.

On occassions some of the family funders of the charity project will come and make a quick social call and make sure you have everything you require.

Although we don't have any farm animals, during the warmer months, the neighbours will put their goats, geese, turkeys, donkeys in the property meadow. So if being amoungst animals without having to look after them is a bonus for you, there be some animals!

There are four food shops in the town and chain food store in the next town which stocks a few things that the town stores don't stock. Peanut butter and honey to name a couple. On Sunday there is a farmers market in the next town where you can get a greater variety of vegetables and other things than you can get in the local shops. For any other needs you can go to one of the bigger towns which are about a 30 minute drive away.

The house is very big and there are a variety of places you can choose to accommodate yourself in different ways.

flexible dates

We will work around you.

You are able to come before or after the above dates, but your stay here will be less close to what you might understand a housesitting experience to be, and you may have to share the space of the large charity house for a time.

After March we are always looking for longer term volunteers to replace the current long term volunteer caretaker, to give them a much needed break from the charity house. We cannot describe it as a house-sitting position, as it will not be a role that many will consider as being consistent with the role of a house-sitter. The reason for this is that on occasions you will need to share the space with others, and spend a little effort to accommodate them and share facilities.

Please contact us for more details regarding this.
