General description

  • Main home
A three bedroom, one bathroom house with a separate guest apartment that contains another bed and bathroom. In a private compound with garden and secure parking, opposite a convenience shop. Gas hob, washing machine and wifi. Within easy moto ride of the centre of town. Lebanese restaurant on the corner, Spanish tapas bar within easy walk. Safe neighbourhood.

Needs and Animals

  • My pets
  • Animals with specific needs
  • 3 cats
I have three cats who love cuddles. I haven't had a holiday in three years and want to go and see my family in the UK. I'm planning to go for at least two months, possibly three. The cats are not used to being by themselves, which is why I'd like a house sitter. One has asthma and requires medicine every couple of days - just a tablet in her food. If she misses her medication for more than a few days, she has an asthma attack and requires an injection to the neck. It's extremely simple to administer and nothing scary. Full instructions and a video will be provided. If you haven't administered an injection before, you just have to be brave enough to do it. But if she gets her medication, you shouldn't have to. We have a great local vet who can help if there are any other issues. Ideally, they need feeding a small snack in the morning whenever you get up and a bowl around 4/5 p.m. They usually go out for the night, but whatever you feel comfortable with. If you're someone who likes to sleep with cats in the bed, they certainly won't complain. Ideally, they do eat meat a couple of times a week (this helps to put the pill in).

Practical life

  • City
  • 50 - 150 m² (530 - 1590 sq. ft.)
  • 20 - 200 m² (210 - 2110 sq. ft.)
  • Bus stop
  • Airport
  • Small shop / Minimarket
  • Supermarket
  • Doctor
  • Pharmacy
  • Hospital
  • Veterinarian
  • Internet
  • Washing machine
  • Enclosed garden
  • Ground floor
  • No disabled access
The house itself is pretty basic. It's a gas cooking hob and electric shower. There's no water in the main-house kitchen, but there's a sink outside and another mini-kitchen in the guest apartment that has water. The wifi is 10/mps. There is also a piano in the house. Public transport is usually by moto (public motorbike), although most things are walkable. I will also leave the number for a good driver.

The landlord is a very good friend and lives next door, so any problems you can just contact him. There's a convenience store opposite, shops within easy moto distance, and home shopping delivery options. There's a Lebanese restaurant on the corner and a Spanish tapas bar on the next road up. You will have contacts for people who can help if you hit any problems. There are occasional power and water cuts, but they don't last long in this area. It's a very safe part of town and you can walk around freely.

There's a little bit of building noise at the moment from a nearby hospital, but that might have finished by the time you arrive.

Comfort and Luxury

  • One floor
  • 6 rooms of which 4 bedrooms
  • Traditional
  • Car parking available
  • Book library
This is not a luxury home. It's a standard home in Rwanda. As mentioned, there are occasional water and power outs, but they don't last long. There is an emergency water bucket. If you've never lived in an EDC before, you might find this a challenge. No television or radio, but wifi for streaming, piano, and plenty of books.

Tourism and Leisure

  • City
Rwanda is a small country, you can do many day trips or weekend trips. Easy trips include Akagera National Park (safari), Nyanza Mwami Palace (traditional king's palace) and Lake Kivu, which has some nice beaches and boat rides. There are a lot of nice restaurants. You can also visit the national genocide memorial. A guidebook to Rwanda and EA is in the house.

flexible dates

I'm extremely flexible here. I haven't left the country in over three years, and I really need a break. I plan to go for at least two month, possibly three. Happy to discuss something that works for both of us, but because of the logistics, please be sure of the dates. Leaving early would put me in a difficult position.

VISA information: Anyone from anywhere in the world can get a 30-day visa for Rwanda on arrival for $50. You currently have to quarantine in an approved hotel for one night whilst awaiting a COVID test. I can send you more information about this. You can extend the 30 days to 90 by writing to the Immigration authority. Or you can enter on a 90-day East Africa visa for $100.
