Rural domestic smallholding on the edge of a small village set between mountains and plain, in the middle of Spain, 40 minutes from the nearest city, Segovia.
There are three buildings, including a small, cosy cabin (20 m2, built with straw bales, 2005) which offers independent, self-contained accommodation for 1-2 adults, with private access. There is also a nature study field centre (40 m2, built in brick an stone 2013) offering alternative/complementary accommodation. The third building (35 m2, stone built 1960s, restored 1998) is our dwelling house.
The field centre overlooks a sizeable pond (18 X 5 metres) which is part of the treatment system for grey water (from shower and kitchenette). The pond is home to a variety of plants, insects, amphibians and reptiles and is a drinking place for many bird species. It is a wildlife oasis but also a safety risk for small children. For this reason, to be on the property, the minimum age is 7 years.

From the beginning we have done our best to have a low impact on the natural environment, in the way we construct and use our buildings, and share our living space with wildlife. We are connected to the electricity grid and the municipal water supply. We chose not to connect to the primitive municipal sewerage infrastructure, which empties untreated material into natural water courses. Our solution is dry, compost toilets, both indoor and outdoor: they neither use nor pollute water.
In our area there is good 5G mobile phone cover: if you can couple your computer or tablet to your phone, you will have a decent Internet connection. There is no fibre optic or other cable service in our area.

We are in a nature reserve, with especially rich biodiversity. The landscape is a mosaic of pastures (grazed by cattle and sheep), with forest and scrubland (Oak, Juniper, Pine). Our home is on the edge of a small village set in land formerly intensively farmed for subsistence (grazing and tillage), undergoing a slow general process of spontaneous rewilding, with some pockets of modern farming. The whole area is now managed under regional and/or national nature protection plans.
The village, Requijada, is situated at an altitude of 1100 metres (3600 feet) in the heart of the Tierra de Pedraza ("Pedraza Country”, Province of Segovia, Region of Castilla y Léon), the kaleidoscopic jewel in the crown of the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama (mountain range), one of Spain's most recently created National Parks. Requijada has 20+ year-round residents, aged 8 to 80+, mostly Spanish, but also English, French, Italian and ourselves, Swiss-Irish. There are many weekend and holiday homes used by people from the cities of Segovia (35 km) and Madrid (125 km). There is no commercial activity in the village and there is effectively no public transport serving Requijada, but there is a marvellous network of roads, including many unpaved tracks, …
