Nous sommes à 4 kms des très belles plages sud-Vendéennes entre Longeville et Jard-sur-Mer, et à seulement 20 minutes des Sables d'Olonne. Il y a plein de belles choses a découvrir en Vendée !
Ne manquez pas d'explorer notre belle région : Le Marais de Poitevin s'étend de Longeville vers l'Est; au sud, La Rochelle et l'Ile de Ré sont a une heure de voiture (bateau de La Tranche-sur-Mer en été); au Nord, Nantes est a 1h15.

THE MAIN old house and the modernised gites are round a central courtyard- you will be able to use the large family kitchen/dining room, large sitting room with TV and outdoor terrace give onto the gardens -you will have your own bedroom and bathroom or, if you prefer you can live in one of our gîtes (holiday apartments used by friends and family) 2 rooms, kitchen and shower.

Half way down the West coast of France, between Nantes and La Rochelle, the Vendée is a département of contrasting landscapes : soft green, rolling pastures, woodlands and rivers of the « Bocage » areas, two offshore islands : « Ile d’Yeu » a hideaway just an hour by ferry, and « Noirmoutier » linked to the mainland by an ancient stone causeway at low tide and today by a modern bridge. The south coast - where we live - boasts some of our finest Atlantic beaches backed by wooded dunes behind which nestle the villages. With a sunshine record of 2 500 hours per year, we swim from May to October and it’s a wonderful place for all kinds of water-sports.
The Vendée has nationally important wildlife-rich coastal wetlands. The Parc Naturel du Marais de Poitevin stretches eastwards from Longeville-sur-Mer round the Baie de l’Aiguillon south to La Rochelle. We like to lazily boat, canoe, cycle or walk along the tree-lined waterways, fascinated by this special landscape forged by monks and cottagers who, over hundreds of years, patiently reclaimed lands from the sea … the last dykes were built in the 1960s at Saint Michel en l’Herm. …

A few kilometres inland, villages with pretty church spires arc around the fringe of these rich marshy grazing lands called« le communal ». These communities were once safe harbours on the old coastline … Springtime brings a round of local festivities to celebrate cattle and horses being put out to grass - until the Autumn rains come to flood the area through the Winter months, recreating the « seascape ».
All along the coast the seafood is delicious … the daily catch of the fleet at Les Sables d’Olonne is sold locally at fishmongers and markets and transformed into tasty dishes in lively restaurants. Close to home, we love to sit watching the sunset at Port-la-Guittière in the Talmont estuary, whilst producers shuck oysters for us, served with a glass of crisp white wine.
Vendeens are active in work and in play. Our main occupations include, agriculture, fishing and derived industries, boat-building and tourism. With a strong network of associations and volunteers, there here is no lack of cultural and sporting events : The world famous theme park is fun for all the family and the evening historical enactment at the Puy du Fou is truly splendid pageantry, as at other sites such as Richard the Lionheart’s castle at Talmont Saint Hilaire, or Blue Beard’s castle at Tiffoges. L’Historial is an excellent modern museum highlighting Vendéen history and culture, the Logis de la Chabotterie tells the story of life in a country house and the disastrous genocide following the Vendée’s uprising against the French Revolution.
There are many listed houses, monuments and gardens well worth exploring.
Concerts of all kinds abound ranging from the pop Festival de Poupet in July to a splendid baroque music and gardens festival at William Christie’s home the last week of August.
Noirmoutier and Terre Neuve Chateau at Fontenay-le-Comte spoil us with theatre festivals.
There is good golfing, an international tennis tournament, horse events and a national stud at La Roche sur Yon, and several yachting events - of which the famous « Vendée Globe » round the world single handed yacht race leaves from Les Sables d’Olonne every four years … Next departure November 2020, so January will see us watching for the return of those maritime heroes who make it home.
Road, rail and air links are excellent. The airports and cities of La Rochelle and Nantes are an hour away by road. You can reach the UK comfortably within a day via the autoroutes to the ferry ports; the efficient TGV rail links us to Paris from Les Sables d’Olonne (under 3.5 hrs) and from La Roche-sur-Yon (3 hrs).
