Needs and animals

Vegetable patch | 2 Dogs | 4 Farm animals

We have two rescue dogs, Polly who is a podengo breed, 4 years old who has been with us for almost one year, and Malou, a German Shepherd, 3 years old, who has been with us since June 2026.

We also have chickens, Mabel, Peggy & Evelyn, who are around 18 months old and who give us very tasty eggs.

Polly & Malou have two meals a day, morning and evening, kibble with water and some treats during the day. We take them down the garden first thing at about 7.30am for their toilet and later a daily circular walk around the village, which takes around 30-40 minutes. Both need to be on leads for walks. Polly is a hunting breed so needs to be on a lead in the garden as she will follow a scent & cannot be allowed near the chickens, Malou is fine off lead in the garden (she’s scared of the chickens!). They’re good friends and playmates and very affectionate girls, who love people. As we’re retired and with the dogs most of the time, we don’t like to leave them any longer than 4 hours during the day.

The chickens are easy to look after. Food and water each day and they are let out to free roam, we have an electric door on the coop which opens and closes at dawn/dusk. They just need to be checked that they are all in at dusk, close the run doors and need cleaning out once per week - we have an omlet coop which is very easy to clean.

House

Our home is a single storey villa with a mezzanine and store room above, located in a quiet village, 5 minutes drive from Penela and 30 minutes drive from the university city of Coimbra. We have a large, fully enclosed and private garden with a small number of vines, olive & fruit trees as well as raised beds for vegetables. We have a very spacious & comfortable tiered terrace with far reaching views of the countryside and distant mountains with often spectacular sunsets. There are walks nearby, it’s very peaceful.
