Needs and animals

Animals with specific needs | Many plants | 2 Cats

We expect to take care of our cats Ellie and Itchy (feed, care) of course. A basic tidiness would be nice, too, plus watering the plants on the porch in front of the house and in the garden every few days when it is hot and dry and store away mail. We are trying to grow vegetables in high-beds in the garden and tomatoes on the porch, just for a hobby, and also have a few plants inside.
Some of our rooms are private (also for the cats), so we expect you to respect that, like our bedroom under the roof or my daughter's room.
Other than that, you take care of garbage and don't celebrate wild parties in our house. 😉
One cat (Itchy, the black and younger one) needs special renal dietary food, it is important to give her medication once daily, which is simply inserted in her special food (that we provide for). They both go outside and want to be let in again after some hours. They both like to be petted, but they do not like to hang with each other. It is no problem for them to be left alone for a day if you …

Itchy loves used socks and carries those around, just in case you miss one some day. Both cats are very easy-going, careful with traffic outside and are mostly close to the house. Ellie likes to accompany you on a walk, but she knows where her hood ends and stays there if you keep going. If you are gone for more than 3 hours, Itchy is better kept in the house.

Additional information about these dates

We will already be away on June 7th, but my daughter (16) is in the vicinity to show you around and welcome you. She is staying at her Dad's place, so she can help you with information on the cats. We will return on June 14 in the evening, so you may leave earlier that day, since the cats are fine alone for half a day. It is also possible to stay a day longer, if that suits your plans better.

House

The house was built 1898 and is located in a calm street in the heart of Bremen city in the North of Germany. It has wooden floors, 2 bathrooms, an older but functional kitchen with dishwasher and three staircases, from basement to the roof. The main rooms are on the ground floor, our guest room (sleeps 2 + a baby) and one bathroom with shower is on the 1st floor, another bathroom is in the basement, so be aware of stairs. It is cozy, not very modern nor luxurious, offers many many books to read, TV and wifi with Netflix and Prime and has a nice little garden reachable from the basement with a garden swing, a table and chairs plus charcoal BBQ. The tram station is within 4 mins. walking distance, also a street with grocery stores, cafés, bars and a movie theater that once a week at least offers films in English. We also have 2 bicycles which you may want to use, since Bremen is a cyclists town. Within the city, there is no car needed, you can reach everything by bike, foot or public transport. Within the city, there is no car needed, you can reach everything by bike, foot or public transport. The main station to take trips to Hamburg or the North Sea or other places around is just 10 mins away by tram. Also, the airport is only two tram rides away (30 mins). The next tram stop with three different lines is within 4 mins. walking distance.

Despite the many books (German and some English, too), we have a collection of vinyl records and cds that you are free to listen to if you handle the vinyl with care. There are no luxury items. The washing machine and dryer as well as deep freeze are in the basement. The garden offers some vegetables to pick in summer. The porch is a very nice place with a sofa and table plus bench and some plants/tomatoes. There are two bicycles to use.

Despite the vicinity of all city things, living in our house is rather quiet. The neighbors are friendly and no party people. To the right there is a younger family, you can sometimes hear the kids. The traffic nearby is quiet, too, because the street around the corner is for cyclists and cars have to go slow. Our one-way-street has cobblestones and parking on both sides, so no racing through.
Since the house is very old, its architecture belongs to the Bremen city look. It used to be a home for a Hanseatic trader family originally.
Since the guest room has its window to our garden, it is very quiet. You hear the birds singing and someone mowing the lawn like on the countryside.

Tourism and Leisure

Bremen is a very cute city that is not huge but has many different spots to discover. Starting with the historic sites in the center, you can touch the Bremen town musicians or drink coffee on the old market place, adjacent to UNESCO world heritage buildings like the city hall. You can go shopping there or visit one of three bigger malls (tram stops). Walk along the Weser river and take a swim in one of the lakes: behind the Weser river or in the city park near university. The art gallery Kunsthalle is worth a visit, and the quarter of our house is simply called "the quarter" – an urban, culturally mixed area with lots of restaurants, cafés, bars and little shops. You can take boat trips on the Weser river or go rowing in the "Bürgerpark" (10 mins. by bike from here). Discover the newly built "Überseestadt" with cool office buildings and places near the water to have a drink or a nice meal. We will gladly offer more advice when you are here! If you arrive early, we will give you a little tour in our neighborhood to show you around, plus we have a detailed house …

We had a lovely time in Bremen looking after Itchy and Ellie. Both cats are very easy. Itchy loves to get on your lap when you're watching TV, Ellie prefers spending time outside, but both will get come in and let you know when it's feeding time! :-) Jessica and Jan were very welcoming, respectful and hospitable. Jessica showed me around the area and gave plenty of tips on places to go to. Communication before and during the sit was easy. Their home is in a very vibrant area of Bremen, perfect for people watching. A few blocks away there are coffee shops, supermarkets, nice pubs and everything you could possibly need. The house itself is a lived-in family home. If you need a minimalistic, Ikea-style apartment, then this is probably not for you. We loved the cosy living/dining room and our bedroom was comfy and very quiet. A lovely sit in a lovely city!

We had a wonderful week at Jessica's and Jans home. Their house was a bit chaotic but very charming. Moreover it was locatated at the ideal spot. Max 1,5 km from the Bremen historical center (easy reachable with public transport). The quarter was extremely charming with a lot of restaurants, pubs and shops. Oh....and before I forget Jessica and Jan were very friendly end helpful hosts. Jan also guided us in the neighbourhood and showed the interesting places to see and things to do. A stay with Jessica and Jan is absolutely recommendable.

Jessica, Jan and their family were very welcoming. They recommend spots which are nice to visit in Bremen. The two cats, Itchy and Ellie are friendly and easy to maintain.
