Needs and animals

Many plants | 1 Cat

I have one indoor cat, Beckett, who is 8 years old. Beckett loves company and has the sweetest nature. He's very affectionate. He needs feeding morning and evening (plus treats as required!), likes some time devoted to playing throughout the day as he's never outside, and windows opened and closed so he can ledge-watch the neighborhood (important activity for Beckett!). He's affectionate, sweet-natured and funny. He's great company if you are working from home.
My plants are well-behaved and healthy. Some (but not all) need a drop of water once a week. I have kind, friendly neighbors and friends nearby if anything goes wrong. I prefer an individual (rather than a couple), someone quiet and attentive to a home full of vintage furniture, books, valued objects and art work; someone who appreciates art and books but who will also enjoy and take advantage of the liveliness of all Brighton has to offer as a seaside city. It's a no meat, no fish, no smoking apartment and only you can stay here. No outdoor shoes in the flat. (I have floorboards and it's kinder to my below neighbors). I appreciate splitting the electricity/gas bills and am happy with a 50/50 split. It …

Additional information about these dates

I am traveling to New York for this period and ideally I'd like someone to be living here with Beckett while I am gone.

House

Beautifully renovated, peaceful, airy, large, light, 1-bed apartment (top floor) in the centre of Brighton with partial sea views and 3 minutes from the seafront. Located in a small leafy square but nestled in the bustling heart of the city and 15 mins walk from train station. Excellent cheap eats, top notch restaurants and a ton of cafes, food shops, indie boutiques all within 5-10 mins. London an hour away on the train and easy for day visits. The South Downs are accessible by train and bus too, 20 mins away, and are gorgeous for walks and nature days. No TV as I watch everything on my laptop with my Bose speaker. Loads of beautiful art books, lots of music (even CDs, though who plays those anymore?!), and so much to do as soon as you step out the door. Nobody is ever bored who lives or visits here! It's a great place to work from home, or just for a few days holiday (with a cat called Beckett). Brighton is a fantastic place to live - full of independent creative people and shops, the Lanes (famous with everyone who visits), cinemas, a great music scene, a vibrant international food and coffee culture, from steaming fresh bowls of Vietnamese Pho and great ramen noodle bars to expensive fine dining, all a stone's throw from my home. Despite being central and close to the sea, it's a quiet flat with a calm atmosphere overlooking a small square with leafy trees. I'm a writer and an academic. I do yoga at home so tranquility is essential to me. The Southdowns national park, Beachy Head and the Severn Sisters white cliffs are a hop and a skip away on a beautiful scenic train ride or coastal bus ride, excellent for long hikes with spectacular sea views. You are 25 mins from Gatwick by train, London is an hour away with many trains all day and late into the evening.

Tourism and Leisure

Given that Brighton is one of the top seaside tourist destinations in the UK, I don't think there's much I need to add. You can walk everywhere in the city from where I live, you're 5 mins from the sea front for long sunset walks (I do them most days), you can swim when the weather is warm enough (or if you're brave you can take a cold dip), or wander around the city, pop out to the Southdowns, head to London and back for a day trip, or out along the coast to other great little coastal cities and towns (Hastings, Eastbourne, and Lewes in land). You'll find a ton of information online.

Sara Jane is a wonderful host and a wonderful human, I feel so fortunate that our paths crossed and that I was able to spend a month in her home with her dear Beckie, who is truly the sweetest feline companion…it was tough to leave him at the end of our time together! An easy-going, easy-to-care-for, and easy-to-fall-in-love-with kinda cat. From our first messages and video calls, communication with Sara Jane was very straightforward, open and clear. She really made me feel at home in her home, and in Brighton, with great recommendations for places to go and things to do. The flat is a beautiful space to spend time in, and is very central making it an ideal base for exploring Brighton and the surrounding countryside, plus the sea view from the kitchen window made every day feel like a holiday. The whole experience was such a joy, I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.

Sara Jane will welcome you as a guest and will have at heart that you have a good stay and you feel at home. She can give you nice tips or ideas to enjoy your stay. The apartment is very nice and so well located, ideal for exploring Brighton. Beckett the cat is really adorable and easy going. Two delicious encounters. Thank you again for this great opportunity!
