Needs and animals

1 Dog

We have an 11 (soon to be 12) year old Corgi. She is on a special diet to try and keep her weight down but apart from that she is no trouble. She gets fed twice each day.
Her name is Princess and she gets walks when I can arrange them with a young girl from the village and on Sunday afternoons she always goes for a walk with a couple who come over from Beauly, so if you wanted to take her out, that's fine. I have to take her to the village to meet Amy and she does charge for the walks but I would cover the cost of that before I went away.
Princess drinks only filtered water but that is not a problem as there is always some in the Kitchen.
Princess has two beds, one in the Kitchen and one on the Landing which she uses at night.
Since we live on the side of a hill, there is very little garden to be looked after so no problems there that I can see.
There are two downstairs toilets and the bedroom you would be using is quite close to one of them along with the Bathroom

Apart from the occasional military jet and the rescue helicopters, it is peaceful here, even though we overlook a main road.

Additional information about these dates

We would like it if whoever comes to stay could arrive a day or two before we leave so that we can let them know about Princess' meals along with some of the household machinery which can be a bit 'high-tec'.

House

Built in 1917, our house is a part brick and part random stone (from the nearest river) dwelling. It is on the shores of Loch Ness overlooking Urquhart Castle (where most of the Nessie sightings have occurred) and surrounded by trees. The nearest village is Drumnadrochit (2 miles away) and the city of Inverness with cinemas, theatre, ten pin bowling, etc. is 15 miles so you would need your own transport. There is a well stocked supermarket in the village along with a Post Office and several restaurants. It's beautiful here, on a clear night the stars twinkle in colour. As music lovers we have many CDs and DVDs along with a full surround sound music system. We also have a piano. The countryside here is lovely. With views of up to 8 miles looking to the north end of Loch Ness and no other houses in sight you really feel that the busy world is nowhere near. Wild deer come down from the hillside we live on as do sheep and the amount of birds is many and varied. We can virtually do as we please (and so can you!). A typical day would be: get up, get …

Tourism and Leisure

There is a Tourist Information Office in the middle of Drumnadrochit where you can find details of many nearby attractions. There are boat trips on Loch Ness and Glen Affric about 20 miles away (too beautiful for words).
To the West there's the Isle of Skye with Dunvegan Castle and where you can choose a ferry or the bridge to cross the Sound of Sleat to get to the island.
To the South there is Ben Nevis (approximately 65 miles down the road) and which you can climb as well as Aonach Mor (two mountains away from Ben Nevis) where you can take the cable car up to the top, have a meal in the restaurant and look down at amazing views. You can even send a letter or postcard which will be stamped 'sent from the highest post box in Britain'.
If you want to go North there is John o' Groats and the Orkney Islands with their fascinating history and to the East there is Aberdeen and all the whisky distilleries (about 140).

Val welcomed us very warmly. We appreciated the list with phone numbers and addresses if necessary : the vet and Val's daughter for examples. The house was comfortable and Val took care of explaining everything to us. She also took time to advise us for the route and gave us an overview of the visits and activities to make in her region. And the Scottish weather was perfect too ! Last but not least, Princess was an adorable friend for us and a good company. It was really great to take her everywhere with us, she's so lovely. Thank you again of your confidence and see you !
