Needs and animals

Many plants | 2 Cats | 1 Fish | 1 Exotic pet

Both of our cats are outdoor cats, even during the winter months; however, they love to slip into the house whenever you are not paying attention! I prefer that they stay outdoors, nonetheless, unless the weather is very cold.

Our goldfish and guppies are relatively easy to care for. The frog and the salamanders need to fed worms every few days; but otherwise, they are autonomous.

House

This 16th/17th century farmhouse has been lovingly restored by the owners over a period of over 20 years. Many of the age old features have been added to the property in order to enhance the overall charm. Just 150 meters or so from the banks of the Loire River, the house is nestled on the edge of the small port town of Bréhémont, which is now under the protection of the UNESCO World Heritage designation, and which prevents the Loire Valley from becoming overdeveloped. Within a 10 minute drive in any direction there are 4 of the major Loire Valley castles. The house is furnished with numerous antique items and furnishings that have been culled over the years. The calm and quiet of the surroundings and the beautiful garden are among the best features of the property. There is an outdoor market in the castle town of Langeais, which is only 5 minutes by car. The port in the town harbors many old fashioned fishing and other traditional flat bottomed boats. There are so many things to see and do in the vicinity that one could spend many months here and still not see everything worth seeing. Bréhémont is unique …

Bréhémont is unique in that the town itself looks out over the Loire River with the old port down below. The constant flow of water is a wonderful setting for contemplation, thoughtful strolls, and taking photographs of the constantly changing landscape.

Tourism and Leisure

Aside from the immediate tourist attractions within 10 minutes of the house, there are many more castles and other historical sites to see within half an hour to an hour from the house. All along the Loire River the number of castles is astounding. As a Royal Valley for several centuries, the kings of France and England chose to live in the vicinity, perhaps because of the natural beauty but also because the area is known as the 'Garden of France', with some of France's best known wines: Chinon, Bourgeuil, Vouvray, Sancerre, etc.
