Needs and animals

All animals are easy to care for and the employees help with feeding and caring for them. Only the 2 dogs (mix breed - 20 to 30 kg) live in the house and are very friendly and enjoy any attention they can get. They can be taken on short walks. The only thing that needs to be taken care of is not to leave them in the fenced garden unsupervised when wild animals are around (sometimes baboons during the day). In the evening and at night there is a fenced area in front of the house where the dogs can go and do their business accompanied by somebody if necessary to avoid an encounter with a leopard - the dogs should not be left outside alone after dawn. The wildlife is of no danger to human beings as they are very shy. At night all other animals are locked away safely and watchmen are always on the compound.

House

The house is located on the edge of Ngorongoro Conservation Area approximately 7 km outside town (dirt road). In dry weather no 4wheel drive required, in wet weather 4wheel drive necessary. Wildlife lives in very close proximity but can mostly only be seen at night. Watchmen are on duty 24 hours to keep the life stock and gardens safe from unwanted visitors (baboons, leopards or elephants). All in all life is very quiet and perfect for people who can keep themselves busy with reading, painting, taking pictures or writing. There are simple activities possible like visits of neighbouring coffee farms, walks in the Conservation area with ranger, village tours with bicycles or visits of the very modern and well equipped Hospital FAME or the Health Center in the neighbouring village run by Nuns. It is a very rural lifestyle in the Karatu area. We have lots of books and CDs and a shelf full of DVDs and lots of board games to keep you busy and outside on the verandah we have a stepping machine and an exercise bike. Two fire places (one in the office area and one in the living room). It is quiet and peaceful, and its big veranda …

Karatu is located in the middle of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Manyara National Park and Tarangire National Park and there is also an excursion to visit the Hadsabes (bushmen living close by) Daytrips are possible but at night somebody should stay at the house because of the dogs (during daytime the employees can take care of them).

Gabriele & Douglas are very friendly! I stayed at their place for a period of 6 weeks and it was amazing! They gave me a very warm welcome and in the 4 days before their departure, they explained me everything about the house and the farm. They also showed me around in the village to make sure I knew where to get my groceries and so. The house is in between the village and the forest. Best of both worlds. The loation is very quiet and peasefull and also very well located for daytrips to some safari parks. There are many different animals on the farm and they are all very friendly. The dogs Lobo and Luna, like to go for walks and play around the garden. Thank you again for this unforgettable Tanzanian experience and hope to see you again!
